Martha Kufner Schmaltz had an important role in building CG-4A gliders during World War II at Northwest Aeronautical Corporation. She was responsible for gluing fabric over the body of the aircraft, which had to be perfectly smooth so as not to hamper the flying ability of the plane. Martha recalled that the glue used was especially hard on her hands.
In this image, which appeared in the company's April 1944 "Tow Lines" newsletter, Martha (at left) is pictured with Shirley Magnussen at work on a glider.
