Following a practice begun during World War I, those with family members in the armed forces hung service flags in the windows of their homes. Each blue star represented a family member in the military. When a family member was killed in the war, a gold star replaced one of the blue. Mrs. Mary (nee Armstrong) Dean, of Minneapolis, used this flag to honor her sons William, Sanford and John.
