Frank Soboleski of International Falls grew up listening to stories of how hard life had been for his Polish-born father and Austrian mother, and how much better they found life in America.
When the United States joined World War II, he was eager to do his part.
Frank tried to enlist in the Army at the age of 16, but was turned away. He tried again at 18, and was accepted. He took advantage of an opportunity to become a paratrooper, and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, and was sent to the European Theater of Operations.
This photograph shows Frank Soboleski in his dress uniform, the "Airborne" patch prominently displayed on his left shoulder.
