An estimated eight to ten prisoners miraculously escaped death at Gardelegen. This photograph, taken on May 3, 1945 shows Ed "Butch" Motzko (center) with a Polish Lieutenant (left) and a Russian POW (right). The Russian is still wearing his P.O.W. uniform jacket with his ID number. The Gardelegen civilians had to feed, clothe and provide housing for the survivors.
