One of the publicity campaigns of World War II was the "careless talk" campaign, which urged Americans to be on their guard against letting any important information slip in casual conversation. This poster, created in 1943, emphasized the consequences of careless talk. It shows a mother, clutching the War Department telegram informing her of her son's death in action, while her husband stares accusingly at the viewer.
The service flag in the background is another reminder; the blue star representing the son in the service will be replaced by a gold star to represent this family's loss.
