Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Thomas Avenue Beach, Lake Calhoun, Minneapolis.

Thomas Beach on the south side of Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis has long been a popular place for nearby residents to find relief from summer heat. Before the rapidly expanding suburbs could build municipal swimming pools, residents from St. Louis Park, Edina and Richfield would flock to the beaches on Cedar Lake, Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet.

This photograph by Monroe P. Killy shows sunbathers enjoying a beautiful summer day at Thomas Beach in 1940.
