Minnesota's Greatest Generation

CCC enrollee's "sun tan" uniform

CCC work uniform consisting of wool shirt and pants, and cotton belt. Richard Loida (1922-1976) wore this uniform while working for CCC Company 712, Camp Gunflint #1, in 1938. The camp--whose mail arrived at Grand Marais--was one of several federal forest camps operating in northern Minnesota during the 1930s. Although a civilian program, the U. S. Army oversaw the camps and managed daily camp routines. The Army's influence can be seen in the shirt's shoulder insignia, which indicate Loida was an assistant leader.
