Minnesota's Greatest Generation

The Honor Flight group gathered to learn about the USMC Memorial

The Iwo Jima Memorial (also known as the United States Marine Corps War Memorial), located in Arlington, Virginia honors all Marines killed in action in all conflicts since the American Revolution. It features a 32-foot-high sculpture of Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima during World War II, based upon the famous Pulizer Prize-winning photograph of that event. The base of the memorial bears the names of principal members of the USMC, and the inscription, "In honor and in memory of the men of the United States Marine Corps who have given their lives to their country since november 10, 1775."

The Memorial, created by sculptor Felix DeWeldon, took hundreds of artisans eight years to build and was dedicated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on November 10, 1954.
