The ships moored in Battleship Row off Ford Island were hit hard during the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor. The close proximity of the ships anchored there put ships not directly hit in peril of fire from burning oil on the surface of the water.
This photograph shows the USS Maryland next to the capsized USS Oklahoma. The crew of the Maryland used fire hoses to keep burning oil away from their ship. The USS West Virginia is burning in the background.
