Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Veterinary college students lobbying for a bill at State Capitol

An estimated 95% of all pre-veterinary students at the University of Minnesota were returning veterans. They argued that they were being denied an education by the University of Minnesota, a state institution. The bill passed both the Senate and the House of Representatives without a single dissenting vote in April 1947.

In their quest for funding for a new Veterinary College at the University of Minnesota, pre-veterinary students found a helpful ally in state Senator Anchor Nelsen. Senator Nelsen is pictured here with a determined group of pre-veterinary students. Glen Nelson, wearing his army trenchcoat, is standing left-center, facing the senator.
