Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Young women praying in church, Minneapolis, V-J Day

When Japan surrendered on August 14, 1945 and the war was finally over, Minnesotans rejoiced in the peace in a variety of ways. Some took to the streets to join friends and neighbors in raucous celebration while others attended spontaneous prayer services in local churches.

This photograph shows a group of young women giving thanks in a Minneapolis church on V-J Day.
