Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Waffle Iron

The first waffle irons appeared in 14th Century Europe. They consisted of iron plates mounted on long wooden pincers and held in an oven or over an open flame. More modern versions, like this one, arrived after the Civil War, though they still depended on the stove top as a heat source. Self-heating electric waffle irons debuted after World War I. This waffle iron was used by a family in Minneapolis.
