Most working women held jobs in traditionally female roles before World War II, such as retail store clerks,secretaries, and teachers. Wartime defense plants offered greater opportunities and higher wages. Martha Kufner Schmaltz left her job at Montgomery Ward to join the home front work force in 1942.
