After decades of development, practical domestic washing machines arrived in the 1920s. The intense labor required in manual washing, combined with the widespread adoption of electricity in urban homes, ensured massive demand for automatic washers. Though the first models were expensive, prices soon fell and more than a million machines were sold annually by the mid-1930s. This Kenmore model was marketed by Sears, Roebuck and Company.
