Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Washboard

Few household tasks required as much physical labor as the laundry. Clothes were soaked in hot, soapy water, then pressed by hand against a washboard. In pushing wet clothes against the washboard's ridges, water was flushed through the cloth, carrying dirt and stains away with it. Clothes were then rinsed in clean water and hung to dry. Washboards of the 1930s were little changed from those of a century before. Washboards of this design are still made, though they are largely used as musical instruments today.
