Douglas C-47 Skytrain painted with invasion stripes

During the massive invasion of Normandy, France on June 6, 1944, thousands of planes made the journey across the English Channel to bring troops to their target landing areas. To avoid confusion and prevent the transport planes from being shot down by friendly fire from the ships in the Channel, each C-47 was painted with broad white bands around the fuselage and wings, as shown in this photograph.
