The post-war "baby boom" meant that many women followed the career path of stay-at-home moms. The young mother in this 1947 photograph is reading a story to three young children, all under the age of five. This family lived in a "basement house," perhaps while the rest of the home was under construction - a common solution during the post-war housing crunch.
