Minnesota's Greatest Generation

Woman working in a shop forging metals, 1950

With the manpower shortage brought about by World War II, women found new opportunities in the workplace and gained new skills, experience, and independence. When the war ended, some were content to leave their jobs and return to their homes and families, while others chose to continue to pursue work in fields that had traditionally been reserved for men.

The young woman in this 1950 photograph is shown working at a forge.
