Holidays were important events on the country school calendar, and teachers strove to make each one special for their students. This strand of Christmas lights was used by a rural school teacher near St. Cloud, Minnesota. The school had no electricity. The teacher connected the lights to batteries as a surprise for her students. The lights and battery were purchased at Gamble's Hardware in St. Cloud.
